A single vineyard and grapes treated gently and with care produces our delicate and elegant Ridgelands Pinot Noir, its rare quality recognised with a Double Gold award in the 2020 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.
Elgin Vintners Ridgelands Pinot Noir 2018 was one of just 89 out of more than 1 500 entries to make the cut of a score of at least 93 and achieve Double Gold status.
Our cool Elgin climate is ideal for nurturing fresh and elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and Elgin Vintners Chardonnay 2019 showed its style in winning a Gold medal in the Michelangelo awards, one of South Africa’s largest wine competitions.
“We’re thrilled with our achievements in a tough year for the wine industry and in a field of healthy competition. Our philosophy of maximum care, minimal intervention continues to reap rewards for Elgin Vintners,” winemaker Marinda Kruger-Claassen said.
The Elgin Vintners Ridgelands range of domain- and vineyard-specific wines are crafted with care to express a true sense of place. Ridgelands Pinot Noir 2018 is treated with the soft touch that this delicate grape needs – hand-sorted, 30% whole-bunch fermented and gently pressed before being aged for 11 months in older Burgundian oak barrels. The result is alluring fragrance of red berry fruits and delicate touches of forest undergrowth, a wine of elegance and subtlety.
Minimal intervention in the making of Elgin Vintners Chardonnay 2019 and eight months maturing in a balance of new and older barrels produces a wine of poise and balance, with the minerality and lively citrus typical of Elgin chardonnays. Fresh fruit balances with acidity and subtle oak influence for a richly textured wine, perfect for drinking on release and rewarding with patient cellaring.
