T’Kane Ouwe, translated as Eland’s Path, was a track used by the Knoi herders crossing over the Gamtouw mountain range.

This is a cool area, situated 12-20 km from the sea, with mean February (ripeningstage) temperatures of 19 – 20°C. Soils are predominantly ferrugnous (iron rich) gravel on highly weathered, soft Bokkeveld Group shale, situated at 200 – 300 maltitude and surrounded by Table Mountain

This straw wine was made form aromatic, Viognier grapes. The grapes were harvested at 23°B. The bunches were spread out on straw to absorb the moisture whilst the shaded sun dries the grapes gradually. After 10 days, the sugar concentrates to 28°B to 30°B. The grapes are pressed and the juice settled before transferring to very old French oak barrels. The juice undergoes natural fermentation and no sulphuring takes place for 3 months following fermentation. After this 3 month period, wines are lightly sulphured and further matures in barrel for 6 months.

This straw wine has a natural sugar concentration and well-balanced acidity which ensure an elegant and fresh dessert wine. Notes of honey, almonds and sweet floral aromas which follow through to the palate. Silky smooth texture and a lengthy finish.
