T’Kane Ouwe, translated as Eland’s Path, was a track that the Khoi herders used to cross the Gamtouw mountain range.

This is a cool area, situated 12–20 km from the sea, with mean February (ripening-stage) temperatures of 19–20 °C. The vineyards grow on predominantly ferruginous (iron-rich) gravel over highly weathered, soft Bokkeveld Group shale, at 200–300 m altitude, surrounded by Table Mountain sandstone formations.

This straw wine is made from aromatic Viognier grapes. We harvest the bunches at 23 °B and spread them on straw to absorb excess moisture while the shaded sun dries them gradually. After 10 days, the sugar concentration reaches 28–30 °B. We allow fermentation to occur naturally in very old French oak barrels and add no sulphur for the first three months after fermentation. Thereafter, the wine is lightly sulphured and matures in barrel for a further six months.

This straw wine has a natural sugar concentration balanced by lively acidity, ensuring an elegant and fresh dessert wine. Notes of honey, roasted almonds, and sweet floral aromas carry through to the palate. It offers a silky-smooth texture and a lengthy, refined finish.
