The 2024 harvest got off to a nervous start when a mini-heatwave hit at the end of January, triggering some severe, localised wildfires. Thankfully, we brought these under control within a couple of days, followed by a downpour that finally quenched the flames. Often, fires themselves do not damage a harvest—it is smoke taint that poses the real threat.
In the event of smoke covering the vineyard, there is a real possibility of it penetrating the grape skins, not to mention any residual ash ending up in the juice and fermentations. Fortunately, the Palmiet River acted as a natural barrier, and after numerous sample tests, we declared the vineyards smoke-taint-free. The rest of the harvest continued without further weather shocks, with each varietal ripening in the correct order. The grapes for the Belle Amie Syrah Blanc-de-Noir were ready for picking shortly after the Sauvignon Blanc in mid-March.

We picked the Syrah grapes at just under 21 Balling, resulting in a lighter, crisper wine. Harvesting took place early in the morning, and the whole bunches were loaded directly into the press. The press was left for about half an hour, allowing the grapes to release a delicate blush of colour into the juice through gravity alone. Once the desired hue was achieved, the grapes were gently pressed and the skins separated. The resulting “pink” juice was transferred to a stainless-steel tank at 12 °C.
After settling overnight, we racked the juice into a clean tank and allowed it to warm slowly. Two days later, natural fermentation began. It lasted just over 12 days, with a light yeast inoculation at the very end to complete any remaining sugar. The wine rested on its lees for five months before bottling in early September.

Though perfect on its own as a thirst-quenching delight, this wine has enough depth and complexity to pair with a multitude of dishes: seafood, Caprese salad, light cheeses, Parma ham, carpaccio, roasted vegetables, crudités—and it pairs exceptionally well with poached eggs and salmon!
