Elgin Vintners is situated on the historic Elgin Orchards farm, established in 1890. Nestled in the heart of the Elgin Valley, the estate is surrounded by vineyard sites, apple and pear orchards, and framed by the majestic Kogelberg and Hottentots Holland mountain ranges.
The Elgin Valley encompasses approximately 7,000 hectares of farmland, divided among fruit orchards, vineyards, and pine plantations. Elgin Vintners’ vineyards are planted at elevations around 300 meters above sea level, benefiting from the cool climate and diverse terroir of the region.

Elgin Vintners’ vineyards sit within a natural amphitheater that the surrounding mountains form. This unique topography creates a microclimate with cool temperatures and significant diurnal variation. It also brings ample cloud cover. Together, these conditions extend the ripening period. The soils consist mainly of Table Mountain Sandstone and Bokkeveld Shale. These soil types offer excellent drainage and enhance the complexity of the wines.
"Our style is about allowing each varietal to shine."

– Dr. Max Hahn, Founder and Owner

The Elgin Valley, located approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Cape Town, is South Africa’s coolest wine-growing region. Historically known for apple and pear production, the valley has transitioned into a premier wine region since the late 1980s. The valley’s elevation ranges from 250 to 600 meters above sea level, and it is surrounded by the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cool climate, diverse soils, and sustainable farming practices contribute to the production of elegant, terroir-driven wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.
